Portland Festival Streets

Yellow Mountain StoneWorks is pleased to call your attention to the grand opening of the NW 3rd and 4th Avenue Improvements Project indowntown Portland. In this $5.35 million project the Portland Department of Transportation and the Portland Development Commission have, amongst many other improvements, created two festival blocks, one on NW Davis and one on NW Flanders Streets. The project area includes the now well established Portland Chinese Garden, which led to the birth of Yellow Mountain StoneWorks. Overall, this work represents a major revitalization effort in Portland’s oldest and most diverse neighborhood. In large part, due to the creative vision of Lloyd D. Lindley ASLA, the urban designer for this project, natural stone appears in accent paving, the monumental planters, Festival Block bollards and public art. It weaves all of the elements of the design together with an understated and durable elegance.

Suenn Ho, senior designer at MulvannyG2 Architects, was the design and community outreach consultant for the project. Inspired by the culture of the area and environmental influences, 20 elegant bronze plaques are sensitively illustrated by Suenn and installed in a field of YMSW Charcoal Black Granite basketweave pavers. The botanical imagery and quotes etched on these plaques are rooted in oral histories that were collected as part of the Old Town History Project .
Through the fine crafsmanship of Schonert & Associates skilled team of masons, YMSW Charcoal Black Granite basketweave pavers, Golden Granite pavers and Golden Granite planters demonstrate the stunning flexibility and sustainable value of stone on a public project.
Illustrating the varied and multi-layered conceptual basis for this project are Brian Goldbloom’s Festival Street lantern sculptures, featuring YMSW Indian Red and Charcoal Black Granite. These elegant pieces of public art grace the stone planters at each end of the Festival Streets and evoke historical momentos of the various cultures that contributed to building this neighborhood.
YMSW Charcoal Black Granite bollards mark the boundary between roadway and pedestrian areas, outlining the perimeter of the festival streets that will hopefully host multi-cultural events for years to come.
It is Yellow Mountain StoneWorks pleasure to be a part of this urban enhancement project. Once again, the City of Portland has stepped up to its leadership role as a city looking to the future in a celebration of its past. Yellow Mountain StoneWorks is very pleased natural stone is a part of that celebration and that we had the opportunity to provide it.
