From what was once a parking lot in Portland’s Old Town District grew a Ming Dynasty-style Chinese Scholars Garden. Ancient Chinese designs — 14 pavilions and bridges, intricate paving patterns, Taihu Rock, Bamboo Shoot Rock, and a lotus-covered lake — form a microcosm of the world in which we live.
As senior project managers for the high profile garden, Erik Nelson and John Williams developed the intercontinental network of relationships that are today the foundation for YMSW’s growing inventory of products and first class client support.
The sister city project (between Portland, OR and Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China) required deft management on both sides of the Pacific — for example, solving construction and bureaucratic challenges to allow traditional Chinese buildings and garden elements to be built to U.S. codes. The award-winning garden opened in September 2000.
